Things to do in Winter in North Canterbury

A winter holiday in North Canterbury is the perfect escape with a range of activities for the whole family to enjoy. Whether you are after a relaxing weekend getaway or a fun-filled adventure with the kids, the Hurunui District has a lot to offer for people of all ages. If you need accommodation in North Canterbury, Leithfield Beach Holiday Park is the ideal base while you explore the stunning region. We’ve made a list of some of the best things to do in around the park during the winter season!

  1. Wine tasting

The North Canterbury wine region is a must visit for food and wine lovers. The Waipara Valley is world renowned due to its interesting climate and terrain which produces some delicious Rieslings and Pinot Noir. The district has dozens of vineyards and wineries, mostly family owned, set in the beautiful rolling hills. Take a day to relax in the crisp winter sun with a cheeseboard and tasting flight of wines while you enjoy the picturesque view of the vineyards. Cheers to that!

  1. Walking and biking

Hurunui accommodates keen walkers and bikers alike with a range of different trails depending on what you are after.  The Waipara Valley Vineyard Trail starts at the Glenmark Domain and will take you past vast farmlands and producing vineyards – don’t forget to stop in at one of the many cellar doors! The Amberley Area Cycle Trail is a leisurely walk or bike connecting Leithfield with the Amberley township. The Fairyland walk in Leithfield is another great option that the whole family will enjoy. The walk takes you through the forest (starting at the end of Kings Road) where you will see some amazing and unique painted rock scenes.

  1. Hanmer Springs

Just over an hour’s drive from Leithfield Beach Holiday Park is the resort town of Hanmer Springs. This quaint yet bustling town provides the perfect day trip to suit any holiday. Parents can relax and warm up in the hot pools at Hanmer Springs Hot Pools & Spa, while the kids enjoy the slides in the outdoor complex. Check out the new private hot pools if you are looking for some peace and quiet. Foodies will be in heaven with a number of restaurants and cafes along the main streets. For those thrill seekers, try quad biking, jet boating or bungy jumping for an unforgettable experience.

  1. Skiing or snowboarding

Skiing in North Canterbury will treat you with wide open spaces, fantastic terrain and a laid back atmosphere. Hanmer Springs Ski Area and Mt Lyford  Ski Area are both small ski fields that offer a range of different terrain for beginners and advanced skiers and snowboarders alike. Both ski fields usually open sometime in July, dependent on weather conditions and snow levels. After a good storm you will be sure to find the best powder at either of these fields!  If you’re not into snow sports, it’s still worth a visit to check out the stunning views of the mountain ranges. All within two hours’ drive from Leithfield, a must visit for a more unique and relaxed snow experience.
